Howto: Build a 1,024,000 Millicandela Portable Light

Monday December 19, 2005

I'm this close to trying this out. I doubt it would even work, since I'm a pretty terrible electrical engineer, but I can promise a great 5 hours wasted while trying. Think how sweet your bike will be when you can ride down the street and cause car accidents because your light is so bright.

Google Adsense Gift

Thursday December 15, 2005

So apparently Googles top publishers in the Adsense program received the above gift pack for Christmas. No indication what the cutoff was or how much those lucky individuals earn, but it's pretty awesome.

The pack includes:

  • carrying case with embossed google logo. zipper closure
  • wireless mini mouse, with scroll wheel

  • usb charger for mouse with retractable cord

  • usb 4 port hub

  • usb gooseneck led light

  • 128mb usb flash drive with wrist strap

  • headset with retractable cord. has two plugs (one for mic and one for earbud) so it is for a computer, not a mobile phone.

Google Music Search

Thursday December 15, 2005

Dear Google,

The music search feature unveiled today is pretty useful and seems to work well. I like the quick access to album reviews, as well as the album covers. However, it's missing release dates. Even when sorted by release date it doesn't display them. Otherwise nice work.

I wonder if people are going to click through and buy music through their parters (iTunes Music Store etc...)? They should just link the album to torrents...

Another Ajax Article

Tuesday December 13, 2005

Obviously Ajax is the latest buzz word on the internet. Everyone thinks they can make their website top notch these days with just a little added code. I've been doing quite a lot of reading about this "new" technology lately, and this article is a wonderful overview, from the basics down to the details. You may already know Javascript, and maybe even XML. But do you understand XMLHttpRequest objects? Give it a read.

Great Web Layout Tutorial

Monday December 12, 2005

If you need to design a new website and don't know how to make it professional and standards compliant follow this tutorial in photoshop and you'll end up with a nice layout like this. Some previous photoshop experience required, little HTML knowledge required with use of sample code. The best part is it produces W3C validated CSS and XHTML 1.0.

Ajax: Totally Awesome

Friday December 02, 2005

You wanna know what's sweet? Ajax is sweet. Asynchronous JavaScript and XML. Most likely you've already used it without knowing it, because Google Maps and GMail both use it extensively. Demo after the jump. Start typing in the form below, this is the simplest Ajax ever, but you can see how it's dynamically updating the web page. How freaking cool is that?!

PriceRitePhoto Updates

Friday December 02, 2005

The owner has sent an apology letter, and fired the employee.
Apparently hackers took the site down with denial of service attacks.

As Thomas Hawk points out there is no reason to start hammering their business by doing other illegal activities. Also the apology letter is nice of course, and quite appropriate, but I would never buy from them now. I feel sorry for the owner if he is trying to run a legitimate business and one employee has basically brought it to a standstill.

Ubuntu Linux/Windows Dual Boot

Friday December 02, 2005

In case you want to dual boot your computer with Linux and Windows here's a 13 minute video detailing every last second of the process. I'd do this, except for the fact that my computer barely runs one operating system, much less two. Hell, I'd be happy if I could run it with the case on and have it not overheat.

Yet Another MySpace Article

Friday December 02, 2005

MySpace articles interest me greatly. What is it about this damn thing that made it so successful? Everyone has their theories, mostly pointing out the fact that it took the best ideas from other sites and incorporated them into one. Part mp3.com, part xanga/blogger/livejournal, with it's ease of custimization allowing users to create custom layouts - these features don't make it unique individually, but together it puts the site on a whole new level.

I have to be honest I skimmed most of the following article, only noticing certain things. This however, is mind boggling:

"It's becoming a phenomenon unto itself. With 20 million of its members logging on in October, MySpace now draws so much traffic that it accounted for 10% of all advertisements viewed online in the month."

Never Buy Anything From PriceRitePhoto

Thursday December 01, 2005

This article angered me to say the least. I've had bad experiences with online retailers before so I can somewhat relate. I have definitely never been abused like this though. With the coverage this story is getting on digg, slashdot, etc. we can only hope these people can't make another dime.
