The All-In-One Beer Brewing Machine

Saturday August 25, 2007

beer_485.jpg

What if there were a machine—a beautiful shiny machine—and all it did, with almost no work from you, was make you beer? Such was the dream that drove PopSci staff photographer John Carnett to spend weeks building what he simply refers to as the Device: a stainless-steel two-cart brewing system that starts by boiling extract—concentrated wort, or pre-fermented beer—and ends with a chilled pint.

This is a friggin cool machine, even though it won't do All-Grain brewing yet. It's a little odd that you have to pour your pint off the same machine you brew on, but I guess it could be a pretty rad conversation piece in your living room. Now your neighbors can look in the window and think you're running a meth lab!

Success With The Database

Thursday August 16, 2007

It's been an incredibly F'ed up interesting month over here but there may finally be some success to report. Allow me to summarize the nightmares experienced.

To start it off I ran out of disk space at my webhost (due to being a cheap ass with a cheap ass package). Well guess what happens when you're writing to a Berkeley Database and you run over your quota? Corrupted everything. There's really no way to recover from this outside of reinstalling and rebuilding everything. So, I figure it would be a great idea to upgrade my movabletype while I'm at it. The newer version looks much better anyway. Oops, with cheap shared hosting your CPU and memory usage is throttled and the new version won't even run. Sweet, more wasted time! So I decide maybe I can use some crazy perl script to go in and fix these Berkeley Databases. WRONG. Then out of nowhere my website won't load. Error 500 for any PHP page. Oddly enough images, HTML pages, and anything NOT PHP will load without issue. Tech support in the Philippines basically refuses to believe this. "Did you read the FAQ?"...please, just stab a ball point pen into my eye immediately. Guess what, after a couple angry calls, sitting on hold, and emails the site randomly works again. Thanks, geniuses.

Final decision was to simply use the old version of movabletype, reinstall it, and I'm going to have to do some .htaccess trickery to forward any links to my old pages to the new ones, since the URLs were all based on internal database IDs (terrible decision) and now they're all different. Also, we're now on MySQL so hopefully this nightmare will never happen again. Never allow a Berkeley Database near your data.

Comet Between Fireworks and Lightning

Monday February 05, 2007

Explanation: Sometimes the sky itself is the best show in town. On January 26, people from Perth, Australia gathered on a local beach to watch a sky light up with delights near and far. Nearby, fireworks exploded as part of Australia Day celebrations. On the far right, lightning from a thunderstorm flashed in the distance. Near the image center, though, seen through clouds, was the most unusual sight of all: Comet McNaught. The photogenic comet was so bright that it even remained visible though the din of Earthly flashes. Comet McNaught continues to move out from the Sun and dim, but should remain visible in southern skies with binoculars through the end of this month. The above image is actually a three photograph panorama digitally processed to reduce red reflections from the exploding firework.

Dirtbiking & Back Breaking

Monday November 06, 2006

A photo of me dirtbiking in the desert about 8 years ago. I thought I was the shit, doing my little jumps and throwing the occasional no-footer. Well this time my luck ran out.

October 7th. What started as a great day of riding ended with me lying in a giant washed out section of trail unable to move my legs (more on that later, I can move them now). Thinking of all the TV I've seen about back injuries I didn't allow myself to try to move, nor anyone else to move me. Blood was pouring from my face, and as my friend went to get help (not easy, a half hour car ride to the nearest town from our spot in the desert) I laid in the dirt pouring my water over me to cool off, and trying not to go to sleep or go into shock. Surprisingly the pain wasn't as bad as you'd think; my face was numb and my back, although it hurt, was in some kind of amazing adrenaline filled shock response. Time was moving slower than ever before, but I tried to think of positive things like my best days of surfing, my girlfriend, and the great beer I had planned to brew in the next week.

Finally a cop arrived with some oxygen. Soon after an ambulance came and they gently put me on a backboard. Amazing how great it felt to lie flat with pure oxygen pumping into my lungs. The nearest hospital was probably a good 40 minutes away, and it was a bumpy ride. Not cool, but I was relieved by some killer narcotics.

Oh by the way, straight out of Kill Bill, just before the ambulance arrived I looked at my foot and thought to myself, "Fucking move!" Well holy shit I got it to twitch. Maybe I won't be in a wheel chair for life I thought. Not bad considering I had zero feeling in my legs, and it could still move a half inch.

Hospital #1, Antelope Valley Hospital. Cat scans, X-Rays, MRIs oh my. L1 burst fracture in my lumbar spine (think "exploded vertebrae") with a piece of the bone compressing my spinal cord up to 80%. Oh wait there's more, a broken neck, but not all the way through. Hopefully I'll be able to avoid one of those horrible halos they drill into your head (I did). Not to mention a broken nose, as if I care about that at the moment. Well, being a community hospital that's short staffed on spine surgeons I was life flighted via helicopter to Cedars Sinai hospital in Beverly Hills. Closer to home anyway.

Hospital #2. Fortunately this world class facility staffs one of the best spine surgeons in the world. Surgery number 1 I received a ton of metal to reconstruct my spine. Oh and luckily my lung collapsed afterwards, I really needed that. Let's just say that chest tubes hurt just as much as a broken back. Fire with every breath. Surgery number 2 I got some nice rods and screws to hold everything in place. All titanium of course. Also, a plastic surgeon put my face back together, but it wasn't that bad in the first place. Just my nose and not really out of place much. Awesome, I won't be disfigured.

Now, 1 month and 3 days after lying in the dirt realizing I was still alive I've got some giant healing incisions, a really weak back, a ninja turtle style back brace to wear for 3 months and I can only hobble around slowly with a cane. But supposedly I'll be making a full recovery, which is fantastic news.

So a month in the hospital really sucked, and I've been through hell, but I will be back. Hence there haven't been any posts on this site, but I may still post a few things while I'm rehabing my back and weak legs. Little by little I'm getting my life back.

- Justin

Ligeia Album Review

Tuesday April 04, 2006

Lambgoat.com recently reviewed this album by a band I've never heard of. I'm a little out of the loop these days on the new "metalcore" bands, as they seem to come a dime a dozen. I'd be curious to hear the rest of this CD as I used to be a big fan of this genre. From the single linked track, though, I can't say I agree with the score of 4/10 they give it. It's definitely unoriginal, but I think they make up for it with decent song writing, vocals, and recording quality. I have a feeling that this is one of those bands that could "find themselves" and make a pretty decent 2nd record. Still, I'm not gonna lie, I have no intentions of buying this one...I'll just stick to my Modern Life Is War record and the new Champion split.

Oh, and +5 points for not having "blood" or "roses" or "dying" in the band name.

Yet Another MySpace Article

Friday December 02, 2005

MySpace articles interest me greatly. What is it about this damn thing that made it so successful? Everyone has their theories, mostly pointing out the fact that it took the best ideas from other sites and incorporated them into one. Part mp3.com, part xanga/blogger/livejournal, with it's ease of custimization allowing users to create custom layouts - these features don't make it unique individually, but together it puts the site on a whole new level.

I have to be honest I skimmed most of the following article, only noticing certain things. This however, is mind boggling:

"It's becoming a phenomenon unto itself. With 20 million of its members logging on in October, MySpace now draws so much traffic that it accounted for 10% of all advertisements viewed online in the month."

MySpace - Next Generation Social Networking

Thursday November 03, 2005

This article is a great read. Not only about MySpace, but how the band Hawthorne Heights made it big with no major label backing them. Hell, they had 20,000 fans before they ever played a show for their debut album.

By any measure, MySpace is one of the top sites on the Web. It racked up 9.4 billion pageviews in August - more than Google - and new users are signing up at a stunning rate of 3.5 million a month. But these aren't the only numbers that drew the attention of Rupert Murdoch, chair and CEO of News Corp., which agreed to buy MySpace's parent company in July for $580 million: The site hosts 12 percent of all ads on the Web, more than any other site. MySpace should gross $30 million to $40 million this year, says John Tinker, an analyst with ThinkEquity in New York. And with News Corp.'s sales force behind it, he estimates the company could double that figure in 2006.

BitTorrent: The Great Disrupter

Wednesday October 19, 2005

"Bram Cohen's BitTorrent software made it a cinch to pirate films on the internet. So why is Hollywood on his side?"

This is a really cool article on the developer behind BitTorrent, why it works, and why it's here to stay.

Send Music and Pictures To Your Cell Phone For Free

Monday October 17, 2005

Seeing as I still have one of the first cell phones known to man (Nokia 3360) and it hardly even receives the calls it gets, well, I can't even use this. But it seems like a good site, and it's all free with no spam. Maybe one of these days I'll upgrade...

Britney Spears Sex Tape

Friday October 07, 2005

Apparently there is a Britney Spears sex tape floating around in the hands of some idiot. I have a feeling if this ever makes it to the web it'll be the most downloaded video ever. If and when this video makes it online I'll be sure to let you know (not that I would personally download such a thing). Hopefully it wont be as sick as the Fred Durst one was, but you never know when it comes to Britney these days. Remember when the Pamela Anderson sex tape came out years ago? Wasn't that just the best thing that ever happened to teenage boys adult men?

The Big One, California Earthquake

Friday September 09, 2005

U.S. Geological Survey seismologist Lucy Jones remembers attending an emergency training session in August 2001 with the Federal Emergency Management Agency that discussed the three most likely catastrophes to strike the United States.

First on the list was a terrorist attack in New York. Second was a super-strength hurricane hitting New Orleans. Third was a major earthquake on the San Andreas fault.

Now that the first two have come to pass, she and other earthquake experts are using the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Katrina as an opportunity to reassess how California would handle a major temblor.

Winning Poker While You Sleep?

Monday August 29, 2005

CptPokr is a robot. Unlike the other icons at the table, there is no human placing his bets and playing his cards. He is controlled by WinHoldEm, the first commercially available autoplaying poker software. Seat him at the table and he will apply strategy gleaned from decades of research. While carbon-based players munch Ding Dongs, yawn, guzzle beer, reply to email, take phone calls, and chat on IM, CptPokr (a pseudonym) is running the numbers so it will know, statistically, when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em.

National Don't Buy Gas Day

Saturday August 27, 2005

So I've been hearing a lot about this so-called "National Don't Buy Gas Day" on September 3rd. It goes by other names as well, maybe "Gas out" or numerous other ones. Of course this sounds like a great plan. Hey we think we pay too much for gasoline, lets really stick it to those bastards. Guess what, it doesn't work.

It turns out there are good reasons California has higher gas prices. Check it out:

  • California is the second-biggest gasoline market in the world, outranked only by the United States as a whole. (California alone consumes as much gasoline as all of Japan.)

  • All of the state's refineries, running at full capacity, cannot meet California's one million barrels per day consumption, requiring the importation of more expensive product to meet consumer demand.

  • Since 1996, California has required a cleaner-burning formulation of gasoline which is produced at few refineries outside of California.

  • The four largest oil refiners in California produce almost 80% of the gasoline supply, and the six largest refiners operate about 85% of the retail gasoline outlets.

Now of course oil companies can manipulate things a little bit by determining how much gasoline they produce, where it gets sold, etc. But they don't have any power to change simple supply and demand. If people are buying more gasoline prices go up, and vice versa.

Imagine now that we all don't buy gasoline for 1 day. This is the plan right? Does that mean they're gonna lose 1 single dime? I'll give you a hint: no. It simply means we're going to wait an extra day before buying the same amount of gas we already would have been purchasing. If you want to really screw over the oil companies then I suggest you don't buy anymore gas EVER, and sell your car. And that goes for everyone that owns one. Is this gonna happen? I'll let you figure that one out.

But hey - don't let me ruin your fun. Wait till September 4th to fill your tank. That'll teach em!

Wynn Hotel - Las Vegas

Thursday August 18, 2005

Having been inside I agree the building is incredible.

"This is one of several indoor-outdoor patios," Wynn says at the ice cream shop, Sugar and Ice. "It's part of a 5.8 million-square-foot building. Next to it is what? Thirty feet of water? And then straight up here is a 100-foot waterfall. Five to 10 thousand gallons a minute coming over the edge. That requires a big, huge gravity-fed system. A huge cavity room there with heavy engineering is in that section of the mountain -- and it's one of several. This mountain is faceted all the way around, and each section of that structure is not only a complex building that's clad with an artificial rock and hundreds and millions of pounds of real trees, the stuff on top -- the big trees -- weighed as much as 200 tons to put up there, each!"

Modded Hybrid Car Gets 250 MPG

Monday August 15, 2005

Modified normal hybrids like the Toyota Prius have been the center of research lately, and it's sounding extremely promising.

Monrovia-based Energy CS has converted two Priuses to get up to 230 mpg by using powerful lithium ion batteries. It is forming a new company, EDrive Systems, that will convert hybrids to plug-ins for about $12,000 starting next year, company vice president Greg Hanssen said.

University of California, Davis engineering professor Andy Frank built a plug-in hybrid from the ground up in 1972 and has since built seven others, one of which gets up to 250 mpg. They were converted from non-hybrids, including a Ford Taurus and Chevrolet Suburban.

"Donnybrook bring the core, Left Coast born and full-force. And though it's not something radically influential, like their West based contemporaries in Terror, Piece By Piece, More To Pride, and Internal Affairs, it makes for one hell of a good time."

Scientists: Sumatra quake longest ever recorded

Thursday May 19, 2005

Very interesting new findings on the December Sumatra quake.

"Normally, a small earthquake might last less than a second; a moderate sized earthquake might last a few seconds. This earthquake lasted between 500 and 600 seconds (at least 10 minutes)," said Charles Ammon, associate professor of geosciences at Penn State University.

The quake released an amount of energy equal to a 100 gigaton bomb, according to Roger Bilham, professor of geological sciences at the University of Colorado.
